Judite dos Santos was born in Porto, Portugal, raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, lives and works in New York City. She received a BFA in painting from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY, in 1984 and an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, NB, N.J. in 1986. She was a studio fellow at the Whitney Museum ISP Program in 1986 and the PS1 Program in 1987 in NYC. Judite continues her research in philosophy, critical theory and cultural studies. Parallel to her visual art projects, language/writing is very important and she has designed and published a number of small books and spreads, integrating her images and texts. Judite is a neo-conceptual interdisciplinary artist, has developed particular structures and means of expression while remaining unconstrained by any one tradition. She has used 3dimensional objects as well as paintings, drawings and photographic images as multiples, utilizing the grid as metaphor to create narrative structures. Architectural space, site specificity and context have been central to her pieces with time, space, physical materials, process and multiple elements integrated as concept. Judite has been awarded grants from NYFA, NJSCA, NEA-Mid Atlantic, Pollock/Krasner Foundation and Gulbenkian Foundation. She has exhibited since 1984 in the U.S.A. and abroad, including the Whitney Museum; New Museum of Contemporary Art; Bronx Museum; PS1 Museum; Electronic Board at Times Square in NYC (Public Art Fund); Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon; Centro Portugues de Fotografia in Porto and Museu da Fotografia in Braga, Portugal. Since1989 Judite has taught at various universities in New York City and abroad.
